    General Context

    Hydrogen (H2) is globally recognized as an important component for decarbonizing energy systems. It also enables rapid and intermediate energy storage, especially as solar, wind, and storage systems become a significant part of the electrical grid. The current challenges limiting the growth of H2 installations are primarily cost and efficiency. It is crucial to propose innovative power supply architecture enabling cost reduction and higher efficiency of the H2 installation.  

    The medium-voltage AC (MVAC) architecture for H2 installations offers improved reliability and efficiency at a reduced cost. However, with the increasing use of renewable energy sources, the question of connecting renewable energies and H2 systems to a medium-voltage DC (MVDC) architecture arises. MVDC architecture has the potential to enhance efficiency, especially for future H2 installations with a strong presence of renewable energies. This internship will focus on studying MVDC power supplies and comparing them with MVAC power supplies.

    • Review MVAC electrical architectures :

      • Review existing MVAC converter topologies. 

      • Summarize the comparative study of MVAC topologies (efficiency, reliability, and cost).

    • Study innovative MVDC electrical architectures:

      • Review existing MVDC converter topologies: AC-DC and DC-DC. 

      • Sizing and modeling of the selected topologies.

      • Calculate key performances (KPIs).

      • Take into account different integration levels of renewable energy.

    • Comparative evaluation of MVAC and MVDC power supply architectures:

      • Comparer KPIs between different architectures for a 1 GW H2 installation

      • Evaluate the impact of renewable energy integration levels (0%, 25 %, 50 %, 75 %, 100 %).

    • Write a report

    Profil

    Candidate Profile

    Master or engineering school student in the last year of his/her studies. The student must have a good knowledge of electrical engineering (power electronics and power systems). The required technical skills include experience with Matlab/Simulink software, and proficiency in English.

    Start date: First quarter 2025

    Duration: 6 months
