Permanent - MTDC Systems Control and Protection Engineer W/M
Description
Established in 2014, SuperGrid Institute is an independent private company with over 150 employees of +20 different nationalities. The institute is a key player for energy transition in France and throughout Europe, specialising in innovative high and medium voltage direct current (HVDC and MVDC) power systems. SuperGrid Institute also develops new technologies for the integration of renewable energies into the electricity networks of the future.
SuperGrid Institute has been ranked every year since 2018, reaching the podium 3 times in the INPI prize list.

Mission
General Context
The Supergrid Architecture and System research programme is seeking to strengthen its team of 3 MTDC system control and protection engineers with a MTDC system control and protection engineer. MTDC grids based on voltage source converter (VSC) technology are a key development for exploiting the potential of offshore wind generation in the North Seas. To achieve their development, it is necessary to improve their operating procedures with major challenges in control and protection, while considering the interoperability aspect of multi-vendor MTDC networks.
In this context, you will be involved in an international project, for which SuperGrid Institute is an important partner, to define and validate the appropriate HVDC interoperability frameworks, through the development of a demonstrator (specification, development, HIL test with subsystems provided by at least three HVDC manufacturers).
Objectives / Missions
Participation in the development of a functional framework for HVDC systems
Starting from the functional specifications of the CENELEC standard, the development of this functional framework will be based on the "Model-based System Engineering" methodology, a tool proposing a collaborative development process between the participants and allowing to move towards a multi-vendor configuration.
Participation in the development of functional requirements for HVDC systems
Using the functional framework and the allocation of functions and responsibilities to the subsystems, the respective modules of the DC network, the functional requirements and the interfaces between the modules will be discussed and further defined. The distribution of functions between the different subsystems will be optimised in order to minimise the complexity of the interfaces. The functional requirements should include requirements on expected inverter ratings, grounding, control modes, dynamic performance, signal exchange, start-up and shutdown procedure, protection strategies, ability to stay connected during fault.
Participation in the development of a virtual model of the DC network
Some control and protection functions are located at the DC network level and others at the converter station or component level. Based on the models provided by the teams/colleagues working on the topic of MV-DC networks, a complete virtual mock-up of the DC network, including the control and protection pre-designs, will be implemented in an EMT off-line simulation environment. The main objective of this mock-up will be to validate the definition of the functional framework and the development of the requirements
